Around 400,000 Ukrainians employed in Germany

Around four and a half years after the start of Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine, about 400,000 Ukrainians are working in Germany, with nearly 350,000 of them paying into the social insurance system.

Details: According to a spokesperson for the Federal Employment Agency (BA), the employment rate among Ukrainian citizens stood at 39.7% in June.

In May, 474,534 Ukrainians were receiving basic unemployment benefits.

"On average, the number of employed Ukrainians is increasing by more than 5,000 people every month," the BA representative said.

This means that the number of Ukrainians working in Germany has increased by 64,000 compared with last year.

The number of Ukrainians receiving basic income support fell by 19,163, or 3.9%, year-on-year.

Background:

• German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul believes that the German government could help Ukraine bring back men of conscription age who are in the country, but would do so "without coercion".
• In late July, the EU extended temporary protection for Ukrainians until 4 March 2028, with a new provision that newly arriving Ukrainian men liable for military service will only be eligible for the status if they have no issues with their military registration documents.
