Trump: Russia has already attacked Ukraine's allies

US President Donald Trump has said that Russia has already attacked Ukraine's European allies and has been doing so for nearly five years.

Quote: "Well, I think they [the Russians] already have attacked Ukrainian allies. They've been attacking Ukrainian allies for approximately five years. So I do agree with that. I think everyone agrees with it."
Details: Trump was responding to a journalist's question about Polish leaders' concerns over a possible Russian attack on Ukraine's allies in Europe.
Background:
- In June, the Polish defence minister submitted an official proposal to the US Secretary of Defence to establish a new permanent US military base in Poland.
- On 17 September, Trump said there had been "major progress" towards establishing a US military base in Poland.
- On 16 September, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also announced a new security strategy in response to an increase in Russian hybrid attacks on Europe, aimed specifically at European countries and intended to complement NATO's Article 4.
