Hungary says it will not join Zelenskyy-initiated Carpathian Eight cooperation format

Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar has said Hungary is not a member of the Carpathian Eight format initiated by Ukraine to strengthen cooperation among countries in the Carpathian region.

Details: Magyar said Budapest had received an invitation from Ukraine to join the Carpathian Eight but had declined it for reasons it considered justified.

"We were invited, and for good reasons we did not go," he noted, stressing that Hungary "is not participating in this".

He did not explain the reasons for declining participation.

• On 18 September, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced the establishment of a new cooperation format, the Carpathian Eight, bringing together Ukraine and seven European countries – Romania, Serbia, Poland, Slovakia, Czechia, Austria and Hungary – as well as the EU as a union.
• Following the first Carpathian Summit, heads of state, governments and representatives of Ukraine, Austria, Poland, Romania, Serbia and Slovakia adopted a final declaration.
• Hungary was represented at the Carpathian Eight summit by its deputy ambassador to Kyiv.
