NATO chief notes evolving threat after EU drone incidents

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has stated that drone incursions into Alliance territory demonstrate an "evolution in the nature of the threat".

Details: The secretary general recalled a drone shot down in Lithuanian airspace by NATO fighter jets two weeks ago. He said such incidents indicate the "evolving nature of the threat".

Quote from Rutte: "The repeated drone incidents along our eastern flank showed the evolving nature of the threat, and we are strengthening our integrated air and missile defence."

Details: Rutte added that NATO is "adapting and reinforcing" its posture on drones.

Background:

• On the night of 28-29 September, Romania detected an aerial asset near its airspace and scrambled fighter jets to monitor the situation. However, no incursion into Romanian airspace was reported at the time.
• Meanwhile, the Romanian Defence Ministry received a report about the discovery of wreckage from an object that had fallen in Brăila County.
