Around 700 generators are currently installed at Kyiv's heating and water supply facilities. However, the city's largest and most critical facilities require separate power plants to ensure a reliable backup power supply.

Details: The generators are used at boiler houses, heating substations, local pumping stations and other facilities. For example, 155 public drinking water pump rooms, which provide an additional source of drinking water in the event of temporary disruptions to the centralised system, are equipped with them.

"However, backup power for the main heating and water supply facilities can only be provided by building new diesel power plants or cogeneration units," Panteleiev said.

He noted that some backup power projects under Kyiv's Resilience Plan are already up and running, while the rest are scheduled to be completed by the end of the year, in line with the original plan.

Panteleiev added that utility workers are gradually stabilising the water supply in the city's Holosiivskyi, Sviatoshynskyi, Solomianskyi and Shevchenkivskyi districts, where reduced pressure has been recorded.

Background:

  • President Volodymyr Zelenskyy previously said that Kyiv's city authorities have almost completely failed to implement the necessary measures to protect energy infrastructure.
  • The government has unblocked payments for some projects under Kyiv's Resilience Plan, specifically backup heating supplies, the construction of cogeneration plants and measures to ensure an uninterrupted power supply to water infrastructure.
