EU foreign ministers have approved sanctions against nearly 1,600 people linked to Russia's military industry, more than half of whom are involved in ballistic missile production, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has said.

Details: Kallas said that EU foreign ministers on Monday 12 Monday approved the addition of nearly 1,600 new names to the EU's sanctions lists. She said the measures target Russia's military industry.

More than half of those sanctioned are linked to the ballistic missile production chain, she added.

"This is the single largest expansion of our sanctions list since Russia started its war," she said.

"We are making it significantly harder, slower and more expensive for Russia to produce the weapons it uses to kill Ukrainians," Kallas noted.

Background:

  • On 12 October, the EU Council is also due to discuss the possibility of restricting the movement of Russian diplomats between EU member states, potentially including a complete ban on travelling outside the country in which they are accredited.
  • The EU has also been discussing since the summer restrictions on issuing visas to people who fought in Ukraine on Russia's side. The EU's 21st sanctions package introduced a mechanism for banning visas for Russian military personnel, but the ban itself has not yet taken effect.
