Korsaks' Museum of Contemporary Ukrainian Art damaged in Russian attack on Lutsk

The roof of the Adrenalin City cultural and entertainment centre in Lutsk caught fire on 13 October when debris from a Russian jet-powered drone fell on the building. Damage was caused to part of Cosmogony, an art project created by Petro Antyp at the Korsaks' Museum of Contemporary Ukrainian Art. The museum's other exhibition halls and artworks were unaffected.

Details: Korsak said the ensuing fire had been contained. Part of Cosmogony, an art project he worked on with artist Petro Antyp for two years, was damaged. The project consists of six parts.

He described it as symbolic that this particular part of the work had been damaged in the Russian attack.

"The idea was to show humanity who we are, why we are here and where we are heading. And the sixth part, which is behind me, is about the future. It is perhaps symbolic that it was damaged, because this war has changed our future. Part of the future in the Cosmogony project has now been destroyed. And that raises the question of whether it is possible to destroy the future at all," the museum's founder said.

In his video address, Korsak also reflected on whether the sixth part of the project should be restored or left as it is, bearing the scars of the war and serving as a reminder of its consequences.

"In the end, I am left with this dilemma: should we restore this future, or leave it as it is for future generations, as a reminder of what war is and what it leads to – a reminder to those who start wars that war is a great tragedy," Korsak said.

He added that the decision would be made jointly with Petro Antyp.

Korsak said the other exhibition halls and the museum's artworks escaped damage. The museum will remain open and continue working on new projects.
