CNN reports Ukraine has run out of Patriot missiles
Ukraine has run out of interceptor missiles for US-made Patriot air defence systems, leaving it more vulnerable to Russian ballistic missile attacks.
Source: CNN, citing a source familiar with the situation
Details: The source told CNN that "almost all the ballistic missiles from the last strike were not intercepted due to lack of the (interceptor) missiles".
During that previous attack, Russian ballistic missiles hit three power plants in Kyiv and targeted energy infrastructure in Kharkiv. Four people in Kyiv were killed and 25 injured on that day.
For several months, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has repeatedly warned that Ukraine is running out of US-made Patriot interceptor missiles.
Background:
- On 11 October, Trump claimed on his social media platform Truth Social that Ukraine and Russia had agreed to an immediate energy ceasefire.
- Commenting on this statement, Zelenskyy said that he was unaware of the "energy ceasefire" between Ukraine and Russia announced by Trump.
- Zelenskyy later reported that, after Trump's announcement, Russian forces struck Kharkiv's CHP-5 [a combined heat and power plant] and a power plant in Kyiv.
- On 13 October, Zelenskyy stressed that Ukraine had not carried out any strikes on Russian oil refineries or energy facilities for two days in response to a proposal by Donald Trump. Meanwhile, Russia attacked both Ukrainian energy facilities and critical infrastructure.
