Details: Politico recalls that Zelenskyy sparked fresh anger from Trump by announcing that Kyiv would resume strikes on Russian oil refineries, even though the US president recently called on the Ukrainian leader to resign.
However, the EU did not attempt to influence Zelenskyy's communications with Trump, according to the publication's sources.
"What do you expect him [Zelenskyy] to do? He's desperate and the situation is as bad as it can get," stated one diplomat who spoke to the publication on condition of anonymity.
Background:
- Trump accused Zelenskyy of an unwillingness to end the war, stating that "it is time for Ukraine to get a new president". Trump also stated in an interview that Zelenskyy is "not the person" the States should be dealing with.
- Zelenskyy expressed concern that the US might enter into other energy deals with Russia following the diesel agreement. The president also expressed disappointment with the US stance, stating that it is "painful" when he chooses another side.
