Details: Merz stressed that Germany and other European countries remain willing to negotiate at any time.
"Our support for Ukraine is not intended to prolong this war. But capitulation – let alone Ukraine's unconditional capitulation – is out of the question. Because that would mean the capitulation of all of us," he said at an economic forum in Berlin on Wednesday.
Merz added that the greatest threat to Germany's security is from Russian disinformation and hybrid attacks.
He accused Moscow of launching "a fundamental attack on the political order established after the end of the Cold War".
"My greatest concern at this moment is not our economy, not the US or China, but Russia's influence on our society," Merz said.
The chancellor said he was referring to acts of sabotage, hybrid attacks on telecommunication systems, and attempts to destabilise Germany.
Merz stressed that such attacks take place every day and their significance is still underestimated in Germany.
