Details: Putin said the aim of negotiations with the US and Ukraine will be to "achieve lasting peace and ensure Russia's security". He stated that Russia is still "ready to negotiate and seek a way out of the difficult situation in Ukraine".
He claimed that Russia will fulfil its objectives and that "all the goals of the special military operation" (the term used by Russian propaganda to describe the Russia-Ukraine war) will be achieved.
Putin also claimed that Ukrainians are being "rounded up in the streets like stray dogs and forcibly sent to the front".
Quote: "Kyiv chose war itself – 'fine, then'. Russia offered to help Ukraine reach an agreement with Donbas, but Kyiv chose guns, Putin said."
Background:
- On 21 October in Saint Petersburg, a meeting took place between US President Donald Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff and Putin. It lasted for about 3 hours.
- The talks in Russia took place the day after Witkoff met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the leaders of Norway and Finland in Oslo.
- During the meeting on 21 October, Witkoff called Putin a "humanitarian".
- In turn, Putin told Witkoff that Moscow is ready to resume trilateral talks in the Ukraine-US-Russia format in mid-November.
- Shortly after the meeting with Witkoff and discussions about peace and negotiations, Russian forces launched 21 missiles towards Kyiv, killing at least two people and injuring more than 30.
