Quote from Ushakov: "The president informed Steve Witkoff that we are, in principle, ready to resume the aforementioned trilateral talks in mid-November on the main issue. This issue concerns establishing a security system for Russia and Ukraine after the end of the conflict." [N.B. Ukrainska Pravda does not recognise Putin as president – ed.]
Details: According to Ushakov, Witkoff said that "this decision would undoubtedly be received with great satisfaction by President Trump".
Ushakov added that Russia's war against Ukraine was the central topic of the conversation between Putin and Witkoff, and that they had discussed "ways to achieve lasting peace".
He also said that Trump's special envoy had noted "new approaches by Europeans and Kyiv to resolving the settlement". However, Ushakov said he believes there is "not much useful" in them.
The Kremlin aide added that Putin and Witkoff had also "discussed in detail" the possibility of implementing large-scale economic projects between Russia and the US.
Background:
- On 21 October, Witkoff met Putin in St Petersburg. The meeting lasted around three hours.
- The talks in Russia took place the day after Witkoff met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the leaders of Norway and Finland in Oslo.
- The talks in Russia began with the release of US citizen Stephen Hubbard. The 74-year-old retired teacher from Michigan had been recognised by the US State Department as wrongfully detained.
- During the meeting on 21 October, Witkoff called Putin a "humanitarian".
