Details: Manufacturers that could win German contracts include Dutch company Destinus SA with its Ruta cruise missiles and German-British defence startup Hypersonica, which is developing the ultra-fast HS1 missile.
Negotiations are also underway for a contract worth over €1 billion with US defence startup Covenant to supply thousands of its ground-launched Anthem cruise missiles.
Furthermore, sources indicate that the German Ministry of Defence is holding talks with Ukraine regarding the co-production and procurement of Ukrainian Bars cruise missiles.
Their manufacturer has not yet been disclosed. The idea behind acquiring thousands of new, inexpensive missiles is to saturate enemy air defences, thereby ensuring that strikes reach their targets.
The German armed forces currently only use the air-launched Taurus cruise missile, which has a relatively short range of about 500 km.
Germany's plan to purchase the powerful BGM-109 Tomahawk missile and the Typhon ground-launch system from US manufacturer Raytheon could be delayed for up to five years.
Background:
- The German government expects that creating a new arsenal of long-range weapons designed to deter Russia will require nearly €12 billion.
- The day before, Denmark announced a billion-dollar deal for the purchase of high-precision long-range missiles for the first time in history, amid intentions to strengthen its security.
