Details: According to Bloomberg, the Ukrainian jet-powered UAVs are among four main options being considered by the German Defence Ministry. In addition to Bars, Germany is discussing a contract worth more than €1 billion to purchase Anthem ground-launched cruise missiles from US company Covenant.
Germany is also considering Ruta missiles from the Dutch company Destinus, which have been used in Ukraine, and the HS1 high-speed missile being developed by German-British defence start-up Hypersonica, the financial news agency's sources said.
"They are also in talks with Ukraine to co-produce and acquire the Bars cruise missile, whose manufacturer has not been made public, people familiar with the negotiations said," Bloomberg reported.
The Bars jet-powered drone has a strike range of up to 1,000 km and can carry a warhead weighing up to 60 kg. The UAV can reach speeds of more than 700 km/h. Bars operates as a modular platform which, depending on its fuel load and warhead weight, can be used for long-range and mid-range strikes as well as strikes near the front line.
The manufacturer of Bars drones is capable of producing around 600 jet-powered drones per month. The company is also working on upgrading the drone to the Bars 2.0 version.
Background: Earlier, Ukrainska Pravda reported that Ukraine and Germany signed an agreement in July 2026 on the joint production of Bars UAVs. During the first stage of the project, Germany will finance drone production, with all the systems produced to be supplied to Ukraine's defence forces.
