Details: Streeting emphasised the need to be prepared for a scenario "in which the United Kingdom and the NATO alliance finds itself at war with Russia".

Quote: "Not because we want war – we have no quarrel with the Russian people, and we have no desire for war with Russia; NATO is a defensive alliance – but when Putin gives assurances that he has no intentions to provoke a war with NATO, we are reminded of what he said about Ukraine only days before the invasion."

Details: Streeting also stressed that NATO is prepared to "defend every inch" of its territory and to continue its support for Ukraine.

Quote: "The more ready we are to face against Russia, to defend every inch of NATO territory, the less likely we are to find ourselves in that scenario."

Background:

  • A campaign known as Be Ready has been launched in the UK which aims to prepare the country for the impact of the climate crisis, technological dependency and threats from hostile states. Under new government guidance, every Briton is advised to stock up to nine litres of bottled water and three days' worth of food.
  • Streeting said that the UK must prepare for the threat of "state-sponsored terrorism" by hostile states targeting civilian infrastructure.
