Ukrainian human rights commissioner: Ukraine and Russia will not disclose number of Oleshky evacuees
Further to the agreements reached with Russia, the Ukrainian authorities will not be publishing figures on how many residents of Oleshky chose to return to Ukraine and how many left for territory controlled by the Russian Federation.
Source: Ukrainian Human Rights Commissioner Dmytro Lubinets at a press conference on 2 November
Quote: "I want everyone to understand this, because what we did in Oleshky is, in my view, potentially a mechanism that we can apply to other settlements where our citizens are currently living in similar conditions."
Details: Lubinets noted that occupied Oleshky is not the only place facing a humanitarian catastrophe. The situation is similar in several settlements in Kherson Oblast and other oblasts.
Quote: "Therefore, neither I nor the Russian side will disclose the numbers officially. I really do not want this to turn into 'who had more people moving to them'. This does not contribute to objectivity. You have seen some news reports from non-Ukrainian journalists, and I think you can draw your own conclusions, without the publication of official figures."
Details: Lubinets added that along with the residents of Oleshky, 105 pets were evacuated, including four parrots.
Background:
- US First Lady Melania Trump announced that nearly 800 people were evacuated in the course of the humanitarian mission carried out during the ceasefire in Oleshky, Kherson Oblast.
- Dmitry Peskov, spokesperson for Russian ruler Vladimir Putin, has said that Moscow currently has no plans to conduct new "humanitarian operations" similar to the evacuation from temporarily occupied Oleshky.
