SBU Lieutenant Colonel Arrested Over Attack on Cash Transit Van

Wednesday, 3 August 2016, 04:36

A court has detained a lieutenant colonel of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) who is suspected of being involved in an armed attack on PrivatBank cash transit van on July 21 in Kharkiv oblast, his lawyer Oleksandr Shadrin said in a comment to Interfax.

"The court detained him for two months [as a pretrial restrictive measure] without the possibility of bail and suspended him from his position for the same period of time," he reported. The defense has already filed an appeal against both decisions.

Shadrin points out that the lieutenant colonel was arrested without the consent of the court, which is legal only in the moment of committing a crime or immediately after it, or in case there is a witness or victim’s statement that the person committed a crime, and neither applies to this case.

He also says that the case involving the lieutenant colonel should be investigated by military prosecutors, and not by the police. He adds that the court did not refer to the evidence that became grounds for choosing a pretrial restrictive measure.

On July 21, a PrivatBank cash transit van was attacked in Kharkiv oblast and ₴2.4 million was stolen.
