Russian Federation and Belarus barred from the International Union of Railways

Russian and Belarusian railways have been barred from the International Union of Railways (UIC) until peace in Ukraine is restored.

This was reported by the Ukrainian Ministry of Infrastructure.

"On 2 March, the Ministry of Infrastructure sent official letters to the 11 largest and most influential organisations in the world in the field of aviation, maritime and rail transport, as well as construction and tourism.

An official response from the International Union of Railways (UIC) was received today regarding the suspension of the Russian and Belarusian railways from the organisation until peace in Ukraine was restored. The UIC reported they were monitoring the situation, and expressed their solidarity with Ukrainian Railways in times of turmoil in the country." the statement said.

The International Union of Railways (Union internationale des chemins de fer) is a worldwide association for trade and economic cooperation between the main stakeholders in the international railway sector. The Union was founded in 1922, has its headquarters in Paris and comprises 204 member organisations.

Background:

The Ukrainian Ministry of Infrastructure is working on the complete infrastructural isolation of the Russian Federation. It has sent official letters to 11 world’s largest organisations in the field of infrastructure.
