The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is not planning to supply weapons to Ukraine to defend it against the Russian invasion for the time being.

Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said this after participating in a NATO ministerial meeting in Brussels, Evropeiska Pravda writes.

"I am cautiously optimistic about supplies from some allies, but I am not optimistic that NATO as a whole will supply Ukraine with the necessary weapons in the foreseeable future. That may change, but for now I don't see it," Kuleba said.

He explained that NATO as an institution is encouraging allies who want to help, to provide assistance to Ukraine.

"That's how it is working right now. And NATO provides a platform to discuss such things," the minister added.

Arriving at NATO headquarters on Thursday morning, Kuleba called for further armed support for Ukraine, noting that any weapon, including tanks and fast jets, would be used to defend Ukraine.

It was earlier reported that NATO foreign ministers will meet on Thursday to discuss further arms supplies to Ukraine, particularly heavy weapons.

Faced with the prospect of a long and tedious war in Ukraine, NATO countries are divided over how best to proceed in its next phase, according to media reports.

Background: The UK may send some armoured vehicles to Ukraine, with further support to be announced in the next few days.
