Hennadii Trukhanov, the Mayor of Odesa, flatly denied advocating for negotiations with Russia and asserted his belief that no negotiations will be possible until Russian forces leave the territory of Ukraine.

Details: The Odesa Mayor described the information about his alleged announcement that negotiations with Russia must resume as fake news.

Quote from Trukhanov: "…a whole lot of Ukrainian publications reprinted the Russian fake.

I’m quoting the Russian news agencies: ‘Odesa Mayor Hennadii Trukhanov called for [peace] negotiations with Russia.’ I am publicly declaring that this is a total lie."

"In order to avoid further reckless manipulations, I have to repeat the words I’ve been saying since 24 February: the occupiers must be driven out from the entire territory of our country. We will fight until we emerge victorious. Any negotiations will only take place after Russians withdraw from our land."

"The President is the leader of the nation. Crimea is Ukraine. We have faith in the Armed Forces of Ukraine! Victory will be ours!"

Background: Trukhanov told Corriere della Sera, an Italian media outlet, that he opposed the demolition of the monument to [Russian Empress] Catherine II and that he supported seeking compromises with the Russian Federation regarding Crimea. However, he did call Russian President Vladimir Putin a monster and said that Odesa was an international rather than a pro-Russian city.

In his Facebook post, he did not comment on the debacle around the Catherine II monument.
