The UN Security Council will meet on Tuesday 27 September at 22:00 Kyiv time to discuss the sham referendums staged by Russia in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine, reports European Pravda.

The meeting was convened at the request of the United States and Albania. These countries are expected to put forward a draft resolution condemning Russia's actions and declaring that the Security Council does not support the use of force to redraw borders.

There is no chance of the resolution being adopted, since Russia, as a permanent member of the Security Council, has the right of veto. However, according to CNN, US diplomats will try to convince the rest of the members, including China and India, to vote for the resolution rather than abstain.

In addition, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is expected to speak at the UN Security Council meeting. German media were the first to report that the Ukrainian side had requested the inclusion of Zelenskyy via video link. Dmitry Polyanskiy, the first deputy head of the Russian delegation to the UN, later confirmed that a video address by Zelenskyy is expected.

Earlier it was reported that this week the United States is planning to announce the measures that will be taken against Russia in response to the so-called sham referendums in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine.

The occupiers held sham referendums from 23 to 27 September on whether the captured territories of Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia oblasts should join Russia.
