He survived a coma and 8 operations: the story of an 11-year-old boy from Kharkiv who came under cluster fire

Eleven-year-old Artem from Kharkiv came under cluster fire in his home town while playing football.

He was seriously injured and fell into a coma, reported the First Medical Association of Lviv.

"The shelling started suddenly, without any warning. Artem didn't have time to hide. 

As a result, he sustained open mine-blast trauma to the chest and abdominal cavity, damage to internal organs (lungs, diaphragm and liver) with infectious complications," said the doctors.

For 3 days, doctors fought for his life while the lad was in a coma. When his condition improved, he was evacuated to Lviv.

Ukrainian doctors, together with their British and American colleagues, performed several high-tech surgical procedures. They restored the integrity of the chest and right lung, liver and other abdominal organs. Artem underwent 8 operations. 

Rehabilitation specialists are now helping the boy to restore the functionality of his right hand and improve walking.

He can already dress on his own, wash his face, walk outside, and even play football again.
