Mayor announces new anti-aircraft defence systems to protect Kyiv's energy facilities

Vitalii Klychko, the Mayor of Kyiv, has stated that the capital's energy facilities are now protected by new air defence systems sent by Ukraine’s partners.

Quote from Klychko: "Military personnel have assured [me] that the new air defence equipment is already in the capital.

The air will be better protected, and I hope that there will be no more attacks or provocations with kamikaze drones and missiles."

Details: Klychko also said that it will take approximately 2-3 weeks to stabilise the electricity supply situation in Kyiv.

Background:

  • Following Russia’s strikes on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, which involved missile strikes and drone attacks, the capital and most of Ukraine’s oblasts were forced to implement rolling blackouts. Street lights were switched off in Kyiv and local electric transport was cut back.
  • The situation became even more complicated after a number of strikes on the night of 26-27 October hit energy facilities in Kyiv Oblast; shutdowns will now be taking place more often and will last longer. The previous rolling blackout schedules have had to be abandoned.
  • As of 28 October, the electricity supply situation in Kyiv Oblast remains complicated; it is too soon to talk about the stabilisation of the power supply system.
