Russia continues the deliberate destruction of the existing architecture of nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, Nikolenko stressed.

"By undermining one of the most important international agreements in the field of nuclear arms control, Russia makes another defiant challenge to the world community, confirming its criminal nature and further aggressive intentions to destroy international peace and security. Moscow's rhetoric regarding the possibility of using nuclear weapons is unacceptable and endangers the security of the whole world," the spokesman noted.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine calls on the international community to provide a decisive response to Russia's aggressive behaviour, and to take urgent joint measures to prevent and counter any forms of nuclear blackmail by the terrorist state.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg called on Russia to reconsider its decision to suspend its participation in the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty.

The Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, which was extended for five years in 2021, remains the only valid arms control treaty between the Russian Federation and the United States.

The treaty signed in 2010 limits the strategic carriers and nuclear warheads of the Russian Federation and the United States to 700 and 1,550, respectively.
