Details: The government said it could now take "significant military steps".

The Security Cabinet decision was made in accordance with Article 40 of Basic Law: The Government, which states that the country cannot go to war without a government decision.

The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) announced that schools across the country will remain closed in the coming days.

The restrictions will be in effect until 18:00 on Tuesday, 10 October, but are likely to be extended if fighting continues.

Businesses south of Netanya and north of the central Negev can only be opened if they have access to bomb shelters, Israel’s military said.

The IDF Home Front Command also restricted gatherings of up to 10 people outdoors and up to 50 people indoors in those areas.

  • Latest official figures show that the death toll from Hamas attacks on Israeli settlements near Gaza has exceeded 600.
