Norway prepared to close its border with Russia following Finland

Emilie Enger Mehl, Norwegian Minister of Justice, has said that her country is ready to decide on the closure of checkpoints on the border with the Russian Federation. She made this statement amid reports of the closure of four checkpoints on the border of Finland and Russia.

Details: The Norwegian Minister of Justice stressed that at present there is no increased activity on Storskog, the only land border crossing point with Russia.

Mehl added that no situation similar to that observed in Finland is recorded on Norway’s border with Russia. 

Background: 

  • Earlier, it was reported that the Finnish government decided to close some checkpoints on the border with Russia on the night of Saturday, 18 November due to the growing flow of asylum seekers.
  • Finnish border guards reported that in recent months, an exceptionally large number of people without required entry documents have tried to enter Finland through checkpoints on the country's southeastern border.
  • After that, Estonia confirmed its readiness to take similar steps.
