After meeting with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Republican Mike Johnson, Speaker of the US House of Representatives, made it clear that he had not backed down from previous demands to support additional funding for Ukraine.

Details: Speaking to reporters, Johnson said he had a "good meeting" with Zelenskyy, during which he "reiterated that we support him and oppose Putin's brutal invasion."

Quote: "The American people support freedom and are on the right side of history," he added.

The US Speaker of Congress then focused on criticising the Joe Biden administration for not having a "clear strategy that will allow Ukraine to win" and a mechanism to oversee US aid, as well as for its unwillingness to address the problem on the US southern border.

Quote: "We need specifics about what we are doing in Ukraine, how we are monitoring the use of precious American taxpayer money and transformational change at the border. So far, we have none of that," Johnson said.

Reminder:

  • The US Congress has not yet approved Biden's request for additional funding to help Ukraine due to the opposition of some Republicans. On 6 December, a bill on the provision of aid to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan failed to pass a procedural vote in the US Senate.
  • According to sources, the Biden administration is considering concessions on migration policy in order to secure new aid for Ukraine and Israel in the supplemental funding bill.
