"I just signed another US$200 million drawdown [in military aid – ed.] for the Department of Defence for Ukraine, and that'll be coming quickly," Biden said before starting bilateral talks with Zelenskyy.

He did not specify what was included in the new aid package.

The US leader also stressed the need for the US Congress to approve additional funding for Kyiv, as if this does not happen, it will be a "Christmas present" for Vladimir Putin.

At the same time, Biden told Zelenskyy that "we (the United States – ed.) will stand by your side" even if Republicans block the aid package.

Background:

  • The US Congress has not yet approved Biden's request for additional funding to help Ukraine due to opposition from some Republicans. On 6 December, the bill to provide assistance to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan failed to pass a procedural vote in the Senate.
  • According to sources, the Biden administration is considering concessions on migration policy in order to secure new aid for Ukraine and Israel in the supplemental funding bill.
