German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has said that Germany will provide Ukraine with more than €7 billion worth of military goods after a phone conversation with US President Joe Biden on Tuesday, 16 January.

Details: The parties reportedly discussed, among other things, the urgency of further support for Ukraine.

Scholz stated that he and President Biden are united in their desire to continue to provide financial, humanitarian and military support to Ukraine.

The White House issued a similar statement, saying that the two leaders had coordinated further unwavering support for Ukraine in its war against Russia. 

The newspaper notes that this conversation took place while the US Congress and the EU are holding up decisions on further multibillion-dollar aid to Ukraine.

  • On 17 January, US President Joe Biden will host congressional leaders and top politicians at the White House to discuss a request for additional funding, including military assistance to Ukraine.
  • Meanwhile, Olaf Scholz hopes to use the EU summit on 1 February to urge member states to send more weapons to Ukraine.
