Norwegian NASAMS air defence systems have been deployed in the Polish city of Rzeszów to ensure the security of a logistics hub which is key to supporting Ukraine.

Details: The Polish military reported that F-35 multirole fighters had also been sent to support the defence of Polish airspace.

This NATO-led mission is expected to last until Easter. In addition to the fighter jets and anti-aircraft systems, 100 Norwegian soldiers will be deployed to Poland and stationed in Rzeszów.

Background:

  • On 2 December, the Norwegian government pledged to deploy F-35 fighter jets and NASAMS air defence systems to Poland to protect the key hub for assistance to Ukraine in Rzeszów.
  • On 6 December, the ship Finlandia Seaways, carrying Norwegian air defence systems, ran aground in the Karmsund Strait near the town of Haugesund in Norway. However, the systems were reportedly delivered on a replacement ship.
  • In January 2025, Germany will deploy Patriot air defence missile systems in Poland to further strengthen the defence of Rzeszów.
