The Committee of Permanent Representatives of the European Union has extended sectoral sanctions against Russia for another six months.

Details: On 26 June, EU leaders reached a political agreement to extend sanctions against Russia for another six months, but did not agree on a new package of restrictions.

The source told European Pravda that on Friday 27 June, the Committee of Permanent Representatives effectively approved the extension of sectoral sanctions against Russia for another six months.

These are sanctions against entire sectors or industries of the Russian economy or areas of Russian business activity.

Background:

  • On 23 June, Slovak Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár said that Bratislava was prepared to support the 18th package of sanctions against Russia, but added that it would be demanding guarantees and support from the EU to mitigate the consequences of the suspension of Russian energy supplies.
  • Latvian Prime Minister Evika Siliņa said she was uncertain whether the 18th sanctions package would be agreed upon on Thursday 26 June, but stressed that Latvia will continue to push for new sanctions.
