Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has claimed that an increasing number of countries share his view that the EU is "drifting into war". He says the danger is growing and Hungarians do not want to accept this.

He claimed that more and more countries feel, as Hungary does, that Europe will drift into war and "sooner or later the dead, the fallen young people, will be coming home in coffins".

Orbán also spoke about the right of each nation to decide for itself whether it wants to be in a union with another nation. Hungarians, he said, shouldn't care about what the other 26 EU member states say: "We should care about our own opinion, we should know what Hungarians want."

Orbán reiterated that Hungarians do not want to be in the same union as Ukrainians because they do not want to share their fate – and according to him, Ukrainians are fated to live alongside Russia.

Background:

  • Hungary does not support the idea of granting Ukraine a reparations loan using funds generated by frozen Russian assets.
  • Bloomberg has reported that German Chancellor Friedrich Merz lashed out at Orbán during an informal EU leaders' summit in Denmark for obstructing important discussions.
