Details: Munich's main airport was closed over the weekend due to the drones, leading to the cancellation of many flights and leaving thousands of passengers unable to depart.

"Our assumption is that Russia is behind most of these drone flights," Merz said.

He described the number of incursions into other European countries as unprecedented, even compared with the Cold War period.

He added that the only consolation was that none of the drones observed so far had been armed.

Merz added that it seems the drones had been conducting reconnaissance flights.
