An internal service memo cited by the newspaper said that the drone flew at low altitude over the runway of the airbase in North Rhine-Westphalia for about a minute.

The military police immediately reported the incident to the civilian police, but they were unable to obtain further information about the drone or its operator. Nevertheless, an order was issued to "tighten security measures," Der Spiegel said.

A spokesperson for the Geilenkirchen airbase confirmed on Thursday that after the drone was spotted, the area around the facility was searched, but nothing was found.

The NATO base in Geilenkirchen plays an important role in monitoring the airspace along the Alliance's eastern flank, housing several large AWACS reconnaissance aircraft.

Due to its strategic importance, the base is one of the military facilities most closely guarded by the Bundeswehr.
