Ukrainian intelligence reveals number of cultural artefacts Russians looted from Kherson – photos

To mark the anniversary of liberation of the city of Kherson from Russian occupation, Defence Intelligence of Ukraine (DIU) has revealed that Russian forces looted more than a thousand cultural valuables from the city.

Details: It is reported that 1,233 artefacts were stolen by the Russians from the Kherson Art Museum. Their images and details of theft can be viewed on the War&Sanctions platform.

During the temporary occupation, Russian troops systematically removed exhibits from the museum, including paintings, graphic works, sculptures and icons. Some were illegally transported to temporarily occupied Crimea.

Among the stolen works are pieces by renowned Ukrainian and European artists of the 19th-20th centuries, such as Mariia Prymachenko, Mykola Pymonenko, Ivan Aivazovsky and Serhii Vasylkivskyi.

Background:

  • Earlier, DIU released information about 178 cultural artefacts looted by Russian forces from temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine, including items from the Kamiana Mohyla museum.
  • Over 13,000 items were stolen from the Oleksii Shovkunenko Art Museum and the Kherson Oblast Museum of Local History. In Mariupol, Russian forces seized major works by Arkhyp Kuindzhi and Ivan Aivazovsky. The Scythian Gold collection from the Melitopol Museum of Local History has simply disappeared.
