Ukraine hits Russia's Afipsky oil refinery and Astrakhan gas processing plant – facilities supplying Russian military

Ukraine's defence forces attacked the Afipsky oil refinery in Russia's Krasnodar Krai on the night of 24-25 August and struck gas separation units at the Astrakhan gas processing plant on the night of 23-24 August. Both facilities are involved in supplying the Russian military.

According to the General Staff, the Afipsky oil refinery has a design capacity of 6.25 million tonnes of oil per year. The plant is involved in supplying Russia's armed forces and produces diesel and petrol components, among other products.

The General Staff also confirmed the strike on the night of 23-24 August on two U-272 gas separation units at the Astrakhan gas processing plant in Russia's Astrakhan Oblast.

The facility is part of Gazprom's system. Its design capacity is up to 12 billion cubic metres of gas per year and approximately 7.3 million tonnes of gas condensate per year. The plant produces commercial natural gas, stable gas condensate, petrol, diesel fuel, fuel oil, liquefied hydrocarbon gases and technical sulphur.

According to the General Staff, the Astrakhan gas processing plant's products are used to supply Russia's armed forces, while technical sulphur is used in the production of explosives.

• In June, the General Staff had already reported that the Afipsky oil refinery had been struck.
• On the night of 23-24 August, the defence forces struck the Kamensky Combine, a military plant in Kamensk-Shakhtinsky, in Russia's Rostov Oblast, for a second time. The facility produces solid rocket fuel for ammunition used by the Uragan, Smerch and Tornado-S multiple-launch rocket systems, as well as for a range of missile systems and air-launched weapons.
