Ukraine joins EU sanctions against Transnistria

Nine European countries, including Ukraine, have joined a decision to extend EU sanctions against the leaders of Transnistria, a Russian-backed breakaway region internationally recognised as part of Moldova.

Details: On 27 October 2025, the EU Council decided to extend the restrictive measures against the leadership of Moldova's Transnistrian region until 31 October 2026.

The countries that have aligned themselves with the EU Council decision are Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Norway, Serbia and Ukraine.

"They will ensure that their national policies conform to this Council Decision. The European Union takes note of this commitment and welcomes it," the statement reads.

Background: EU Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos has stated that the European Union is prepared to assist Moldova in resolving the Transnistrian conflict to ensure it does not hinder the country's European integration.
