Finnish president cancels US trip and travels to Berlin for Ukraine talks

President of Finland Alexander Stubb has decided to take part in talks on the situation in Ukraine in Berlin, Germany, on Monday 15 December.

Details: Stubb initially planned to travel to Texas in the United States, but the trip has been cancelled "due to the critical situation in Ukraine".

Instead, Stubb will travel to Germany and join a meeting focused on a possible ceasefire in Ukraine.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has invited representatives of the United States to take part in the talks.

Background:

• The invitation followed a tense phone call on Wednesday between Merz, Macron, Starmer and Donald Trump, during which the parties sought to overcome differences over the direction of peace efforts.
• Trump later acknowledged there had been disagreements, saying that "pretty strong words" were exchanged during the conversation, highlighting differences over the approach supported by the US.
• The Wall Street Journal reported earlier that Donald Trump's Special Envoy Steve Witkoff will meet with European leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Berlin this coming weekend, the WSJ reports.
