Kirill Dmitriev, an envoy of Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin, has said that talks with the US side on Russia's war against Ukraine are "constructive" and will continue on Saturday and Sunday.

Details: In a brief comment, Dmitriev described the discussions with US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner as "constructive".

He added that the talks in Miami have begun and will continue on Saturday and Sunday local time.

Background:

  • The Kremlin previously confirmed media reports that a meeting with US representatives was being prepared to review the results of talks between the United States, Ukraine and Europe on a peace agreement.
  • On the evening of 19 December, Rustem Umierov, Secretary of Ukraine's National Security and Defence Council, said that a meeting between the Ukrainian negotiating delegation and US and European partners had concluded.
  • On 20 December, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said at a joint press conference alongside Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro in Kyiv that the United States had proposed that "peace talks" be held with representatives of Ukraine and Russia and possibly European countries.
  • Zelenskyy also said during an online briefing with journalists on Saturday that he considers it important to maintain US participation in the "peace talks", commenting on a proposal by French President Emmanuel Macron to resume engagement with Russia.
