Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk believes that peace talks on Russia's war against Ukraine are still far from being concluded, but Russia must not be allowed to dictate the terms of peace.

He said that after overnight talks with European leaders, it had become clear that the West and Ukraine would lose the confrontation if Russia succeeded in dividing them and dictating the terms of peace. He added that the statement on US participation in security guarantees was a success, but stressed that the negotiations were still far from over.

Background:

  • Following his meeting with the US president, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Ukraine would like security guarantees from the United States for 30, 40 or even 50 years.
  • French President Emmanuel Macron has said that a meeting of the Coalition of the Willing will be held in Paris in early January, where countries plan to finalise the concrete contributions of each state to Ukraine's security guarantees system.
  • As reported earlier, Zelenskyy and Trump met in Florida for talks on peace, with Trump warning immediately afterwards that he would call Russian ruler Vladimir Putin following the discussion.
