Ukrainian parliament dismisses Denys Shmyhal as defence minister

The Verkhovna Rada (Ukrainian parliament) has approved the dismissal of Defence Minister Denys Shmyhal, who is set to assume the role of energy minister.

Details: A total of 265 MPs voted in favour of the decision. MPs from European Solidarity and part of Holos (Voice) abstained.

Background:
- Shmyhal was appointed defence minister in July 2025.
- On 9 January, the parliament received letters of resignation from Shmyhal and Mykhailo Fedorov, Ukraine's First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Transformation.
- On 3 January, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with Shmyhal and said he expects parliament to approve Shmyhal for the posts of deputy prime minister and minister of energy.
