Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin has said that Russia is ready to contribute US$1 billion from Russian assets frozen in the United States to US President Donald Trump's "Board of Peace for Gaza".

Details: Putin thanked Trump for the invitation to join, adding cynically that Russia "always supports any efforts aimed at strengthening international stability".
He said that "given Russia's special relationship with the Palestinian people", Russia could send US$1 billion to the Board of Peace out of the Russian assets that were frozen in the United States under the previous administration.
Quote: "Incidentally, the funds that remain of our assets frozen in the United States could be used to rebuild the territories damaged during the hostilities after a peace treaty is concluded between Russia and Ukraine.
We are discussing this possibility with representatives of the US administration also. I plan to discuss all these issues with the president of Palestine, Mahmoud Abbas."
More details: Putin instructed the Russian Foreign Ministry to review the "Board of Peace" proposal and consult its partners. After that, Russia will respond to the invitation.
Quote: "In the proposal we have been given, the primary focus is [achieving] a settlement in the Middle East and finding possible ways to resolve the issues of the Palestinian people and the humanitarian problems in the Gaza Strip."
Background:
- It was reported earlier that Russia and Belarus are among the countries that have been invited to join Trump's "Board of Peace".
- On 20 January, self-proclaimed Belarusian president Alexander Lukashenko became the first world leader to sign an official confirmation that his country would accept Trump's invitation to join the "Board of Peace".
- According to Trump's plans, the "Board of Peace for Gaza" is to be created under the broader umbrella of the "Board of Peace". Trump intends to ask countries to pay US$1 billion for permanent membership.
