Russian nighttime attack proves Kremlin's indifference to both peace talks and promises to Trump – Ukraine's foreign minister

Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has said that Russia's overnight combined attack on energy facilities and residential buildings proves that the Kremlin does not honour any agreements and has called on partners to step up sanctions pressure and strengthen support for Ukraine's air defence.

Details: Sybiha said that on the night of 2-3 February, Russia launched 450 drones, more than 60 cruise missiles and also ballistic missiles, primarily targeting energy infrastructure; residential buildings were also hit.
"Putin waited for the temperatures to drop and stockpiled drones and missiles to continue his genocidal attacks against the Ukrainian people. Neither anticipated diplomatic efforts in Abu Dhabi this week nor his promises to the United States kept him from continuing terror against ordinary people in the harshest winter. We are dealing with terrorists who must be forced to stop violence," Ukraine's foreign minister stressed.
He added that Ukraine's partners have the tools to exert influence and must use them.
"Strengthen Ukraine's air defence and energy resilience. Increase pressure on Moscow. Deprive the Russian war machine of energy revenues and access to technology. Isolate the Russian regime. Stop and confiscate Russia's illegal oil tankers," Sybiha urged.
"Putin must be deprived of illusions that he can achieve anything by his bombing, terror, and aggression," he added.
Sybiha also spoke about energy assistance packages from partners and volunteers that have already arrived in Ukraine.
Background:
- On 29 January, Trump said he had received Putin's agreement not to strike Kyiv "and various towns" for a week, without specifying when the countdown was supposed to start.
- The Kremlin said that it supposedly applied until 1 February.
- For his part, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said there were no direct agreements between Kyiv and Moscow on halting Russian strikes on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, although discussions were ongoing. He also stressed that Ukraine would respond in kind to Russia's actions.
- On the evening of Monday 2 February, Zelenskyy said that Russia was currently not striking energy infrastructure and called this a sign that the US might be able to influence the situation.
