US Vice President JD Vance has said in an interview with journalist Megyn Kelly that Washington does not rule out cooperation with Russia in certain areas, arguing that this does not contradict the US position on the war in Ukraine.

Quote from Vance: "So, when people say, well, you can't work with Putin on anything because you disagree with the Ukraine invasion. Well, the president said very clearly, Putin should not have invaded Ukraine. We're going to try to work and bring this to an end, but there might be some areas of cooperation, too [between Russia and the United States – ed.]."

Details: Vance said that the United States may disagree with Russia on a number of issues, but that does not preclude bilateral cooperation.

"His attitude [that of US President Donald Trump – ed.] is: we're about alliances. And you could have a country where we have a 90% aligned interest, but we're gonna disagree on 10% of issues. Meanwhile, we may disagree with Russia on a lot, but we may agree on some things. And I do think that is a fundamental reorientation," the US Vice President added.

Background:

  • On Monday 2 February it became known that Russia had passed proposals to the United States on removing "serious barriers" to the full "normalisation" of relations.
  • Last year, media outlets reported that the US had proposed reviving the NATO-Russia Council as part of efforts to resolve the war in Ukraine.
  • Members of Donald Trump's team have stated that the US president wants to reset relations with Russia.
