The Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) and other units from Ukraine's defence forces struck the Ukhta oil refinery in Russia's Komi Republic – 1,750 km from the Ukrainian border – on 12 February.

Details: Early reports suggest that a fire broke out at the refinery's crude distillation unit and visbreaking unit following the strike. The visbreaking unit is designed to reduce the viscosity of feedstock to produce marketable fuel oil and additional light fractions such as petrol and gasoil.

The refinery, which is part of Russian oil giant Lukoil's corporate structure, processes about 4.2 million tonnes of oil a year. Its main products include motor petrol and straight-run petrol, diesel fuel, fuel oil and vacuum gasoil.

The refinery is involved in supplying Russia's armed forces.

A source in the SSU told Ukrainska Pravda that the operation has set a new range record for Ukrainian drones.

Background: Russian authorities reported on 12 January that drones had attacked the Progress military plant in Michurinsk, Tambov Oblast, and an oil refinery in Ukhta.
