Ukrainian delegation departs for Geneva talks with US and Russia

Kyrylo Budanov, Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, has said that a Ukrainian delegation has set off for negotiations in Geneva.

Details: Budanov also shared a photo taken next to a train with colleagues as they travel to Geneva for the next round of talks with representatives of the US and Russia.

Background:

  • In an evening address on 12 February, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Ukraine was ready for a new meeting with the Russian delegation to work towards ending the war.
  • A communiqué on the outcome of the trilateral talks in Abu Dhabi on 4-5 February states that the US, Ukrainian and Russian delegations discussed methods for implementing a ceasefire and monitoring the cessation of hostilities.
  • Following the Abu Dhabi talks, the US and Russia agreed to resume high-level military dialogue.
  • Dmytro Lytvyn, an advisor to Zelenskyy, confirmed to journalists that the next round of negotiations between Ukraine, Russia and the US will take place on 17-18 February in Geneva.
  • Rustem Umierov, Secretary of Ukraine's National Security and Defence Council, said the Ukrainian delegation had begun preparations for the meeting.
  • The delegation is expected to include Rustem Umierov; Kyrylo Budanov, Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine; Andrii Hnatov, Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine; Davyd Arakhamiia, leader of the Servant of the People parliamentary faction; Serhii Kyslytsia, First Deputy Head of the President's Office; and Vadym Skibitskyi, Deputy Head of Defence Intelligence of Ukraine.
