Orbán accuses Ukraine of blackmail over Druzhba oil, says Hungary may use reserves

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has said Hungary may have to use its strategic reserves due to problems with transit through the Druzhba oil pipeline, for which he blamed Ukraine.

Details: Orbán stated that the Hungarian government is set to discuss the difficult situation regarding oil supply at a cabinet meeting and placed responsibility on Ukraine.

Quote: "Ukraine is blackmailing Hungary, it has shut down the Druzhba oil pipeline. We will have to use strategic reserves. This is the first item on the agenda at today's government meeting."

Background:

  • Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said the Hungarian company MOL had ordered the first batches of Russian oil to be transported by sea via Croatia.
  • Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said last week that he expected complaints from Hungary about problems with Russian oil transit and suggested that it address them to its "friends in Moscow".
