Former Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is reported to have been killed in a US-Israeli attack on Iran. However, one of Ahmadinejad's relatives has denied the claim.

Update: The agency later said that one of Ahmadinejad's relatives had contacted ILNA to deny reports of his death without providing any further details.

ILNA said that while some sources had reported Ahmadinejad's death, the information cannot be independently confirmed.

Ahmadinejad served as Iran's president from 2005 to 2013. Before being elected president, he was a governor of two provinces and later mayor of Iran's capital, Tehran.

After Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Ahmadinejad posted in support of Ukraine on social media, describing the invasion as a "satanic war".

Background:

  • Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and Mohammad Pakpour, Commander of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), were killed in morning strikes on Iran on 28 February.

  • The CIA determined Khamenei's location shortly before the United States and Israel were ready to launch their attack on Iran.
  • Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has emphasised following the killing of Khamenei that revenge is a "legitimate right and duty".
