Details: CNN reported earlier on Sunday 1 March that Israeli and US intelligence services, including the CIA, had been tracking Ayatollah Ali Khamenei for months, monitoring his daily routine and keeping other senior political and military figures under surveillance while waiting for the right moment.
Over the past few days, they identified a rare opening: Khamenei and several other senior officials were due to meet on Saturday morning at different locations within a Tehran government compound that houses the supreme leader's office, the presidency and the national security apparatus, making the leadership vulnerable to a military strike.
Background:
- On the morning of 28 February, Trump announced that the US had launched a large-scale operation against Iran. Israel also carried out strikes.
- Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and Mohammad Pakpour, Commander of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), were killed in morning strikes on Iran on 28 February.
- Iran responded with strikes on several Gulf countries where US military bases are located.
- Iran has announced that a three-member interim Leadership Council has been established to run the country following Khamenei's killing.
