Putin in no hurry to save Iran, more concerned about oil prices, says Ukraine's foreign minister

Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has noted that despite the fact Russia and Iran are allies and partners, Moscow is not helping the Iranian regime defend itself from US and Israeli attacks.

Quote: "Now that Iran's regime is in trouble, the lack of support from its allies is especially noticeable, with Russia particularly absent.
Right now, Moscow is not rushing to rescue its 'ally'. Frankly speaking, Putin probably cares more about rising oil prices than his 'partners' in Tehran."
Details: Sybiha recalled that in 2025 Iran and Russia signed a 20-year comprehensive treaty on strategic partnership and that recently Iran also significantly deepened defence cooperation with Russia's allies Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso.
Quote: "For example, Russia has yet to initiate a BRICS statement, despite the fact that Iran joined the group two years ago. Putin expressed condolences following Khamenei's death; that's all.
The bottom line is that Moscow will always betray those who count on it for support. At the most critical moment, Russia will wash its hands of its partners. This has happened many times before.
The fall of Assad, Maduro and Khamenei will have strategic implications for the Moscow regime, bringing its own demise closer."
Background:
- The United States and Israel launched a large-scale military campaign against the Islamic Republic of Iran on 28 February.
- During a targeted air strike on the palace of Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, thirty bombs were dropped, as a result of which he and key leadership of the country were killed.
- In response, Tehran launched large-scale attacks with ballistic missiles and kamikaze drones on US bases and territories of US-allied countries in the Middle East, including Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and the UAE.
- Lebanon entered the war on Iran's side on the night of 1-2 March, carrying out missile attacks on northern parts of Israel. In response, the Israel Defence Forces began striking facilities of the terrorist organisation Hezbollah across Lebanon.
